Re: HP MSA 2050 remove disk group and vdrain

Hello,

If the disk-group has data in it, then the VDRAIN process will automatically occur. There is no option to enable or disable VDRAIN. VDRAIN moves the data becuase the volume associated with the disk-groups has the data spread across all the disk-groups for that volume. If you deleted a disk-group without moving the data to the other disk-groups you would cause data integrity problems.

As long as you do not need any of the data within any of the disk-groups associated with the Pool, then you can delete the Pool. Deleting the Pool would be quicker than a VDRAIN process. However, deleting a Pool is a permenant action that cannot be undone and once done you will not be able to recover any of the data previously contained within that Pool. You will need to verify that the data currently contained within the Pool is no longer needed or you have a completed and verified backup of all data before you delete a Pool.

If more information is needed please refer to the MSA 2050 SMU Guide: https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=a00017707en_us

I suggest starting on page 22 which has good information on Pools.

Cheers,
Shawn

Resetting the password on MSA1050

Hello,

I have tried RESETUSER and RESTOREDEFAULTS logins with the SN on the controllers but the login does not work. Has anyone been able to sucessfully do this on an MSA1050?

Thanks!

Hello,

You may have already tried all of this but since you did not list all your steps I am going to cover what I see is missing from your post.

You must be directly connected to the array for this procedure to work. You cannot do this through a telenet session.

The commands are RESTOREUSERS - you need to add the "S" at the end.

The procedure does work. I have successfully done this in my lab to confirm the process. Since your system is likely still under warranty you can log a Suport case and ask for further assistence.

Cheers,
Shawn

Dear Shawn,

I don't know about evzar's MSA 2050 setup are

But I also want to ask, since I am also new for MSA 2050, for example the setup are

dg1, 3 SAS with RAID 5 in Pool A

dg2, 3 SAS with RAID 5 in Pool A

dg3. 2 SAS with RAID 1 in Pool A

and dg1, dg2, dg3 were in the same volume (I guess virtual one, named vv01)

and in WIndows 2016 the MSA virtual drive are assign with drive letter

so when we removed dg3, dg pool will initiate a vdrain process, and the data inside dg3 will be moved automatically to remaining dg in pool A that is dg1 and dg2, is that correct?

Yes, the pitty problem is in this drain - not needed data will be moved from dg to dg untill you delete whole the pool.

Hi, I just want to verify that I have upgraded to firmware TS252P001.

It does not say that TLSv1.0 is disabled.

How can I check if the following is disabled in the firmware?

Is there any methods to go around checking?

Hello,

In answer to Kinkin's question - if you remove dg3, the data that was written to those drives will be moved automatically to the other disk-groups within the pool. In your example that would be dg1 and dg2.

Since this is virtual system, the volume is striped across the disk-groups within the pool. It is not a one to one relationship with a vdisk owning a volume as you would find with a linear system. With virutal there is no way to associate one virtual volume to a single disk-group.

In response to Evzar - if you have data that is no longer needed on a volume you can delete that data from the host. That way you will not move unneeded data if you remove a disk-group. The array has no way to determine a single file/database and allow you the ability to delete that file/database from the array. As mentioned before, you can delete the Pool if all the data on volumes associated with that Pool are no longer needed.

Cheers,
Shawn

As per the error details it seems Enc 2 IO module A having issue?

How many drive enclosure attached with Controller Enc ?

Did you tried to physically re-seat IO module A of Enc 2 ?

Did you tried to re-seat SAS cables connected to IO module A of Enc 2?

Did you tried to Power Cycle the MSA ?

Hope this helps!

Hello,

For the P2000 TLS 1.0 is enabled for all firmware versions. There is no way to disable just the TLS protocol in this End of Life array.

The MSA 2040 and MSA 2050 no longer use TLS 1.0 in current firmware versions.

Shawn

Hi  ,

Thank you so much. Your answer is greatly appreciated.

A sequential powerycle of the MSA array setup is recommended.
After that run the CLI command: rescan <enter>
This will rebuild/ rescan your backend SAS map.

If the issue persists it would be ideal to log a support case with HPE and have the logs reviewed or IOMs replaced by the HPE Support team for in warranty / contract MSA.

Adding more SSD drives will ofcourse increse performance of your system comapred to any other drive type.

You can also consider "Volume Tier Affinity" feature as well.

You can go through below guide which will help you for better understanding,

Re: Expand Pool Disk RAID 5 Class Virtual

Hi Mike,

following on with a similart scenario..

I have a MSA 1050 with 4x 600GB @ RAID-5.

I would like to EXPAND this by simply adding another disk (or 2) to the vDISK.... but i'm not entirely sure ow this is done on the MSA cosnole

I know we don't need to add any another disk group as the requirements are low.. We are moving more and mroe towards cloud platforms

Thank You

regards

Ian

As you are using MSA1050 which means you are using Virtual Disk Group (VDG).

VDG is not possible to expand in Virtual Array.

Vdisk expansion works in Linear array only. Till MSA2040 it works.

Only option is to re-create new VDG and add the same to the existing Pool. Otherwise delete the VDG you want to expand and then re-create it with desired number of drives.

Hope this helps!

I can't simply delete the POOL as it has Virtual Machine running on it. so that's not an option

Re: Expand Pool Disk RAID 5 Class Virtual

Do you have only one VDG present and you created volumes where Virtual Machine running?

I didn't ask to delete the Pool. VDG and Pool both are different component in MSA.

If you have single VDG then yes you can't delete it. Then only option is to create new VDG with same number of drives as your existing VDG and add it to the same Pool.

Hope this helps!
