Re: MSA 2050 linear config

Hi,

From 5th generation on MSA's does not support linear configurations anymore, only virtual pools...

So if  you want to use 2 types of disks (SAS and SSD in your case) you will need to have the advanced data services license. Or use just 1 type of drives...

Bart

Please refer the SMU guide (page no 20), it's clearly mentioned "If you have the Performance Tier license, you can use SSDs for virtual disk groups."

https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=a00017707en_us

Also you can check best practice whitepaper (page no 5), it's clearly mentioned "A license is required for the Performance Tier for mixed SSD and HDD systems. For a system with only SSDs, the Performance Tier license is not required."

https://h20195.www2.hpe.com/v2/getdocument.aspx?docname=a00015961enw

So this is the reason you are not able to create VDG with SSDs

Hope this helps!

DL360pG8 with P431 and MSA 1050 SAS

Hi,

my receller said to me to buy a P431 controller to connect my DL360P G8 with my MSA 1050 SAS. On the  MSA 1050 i see the link is ok with controller, the connector led is on, the initiator is mapped with volumes. Everything looks ok  but the P431 doesn't see anything.

I use VMWare 6.7 and modify with ssacli the P431 to enable HBA mode but no more success.

My MSA 1050 works fine with another server DL360 G9 with H241 controller

An idea ? Thank's

1st of all VmWare 6.7 not yet tested with MSA1050 so this is not a supported environment.

Next thing I have checked HPE MSA1050 Compatibility with VmWare 6.5 and I don't see P431 supported but H241 supported. Please find the link to get details,

My DL360 Gen9 running vmware 6.7 and connected on MSA 1050 works fine.

I think my resseler is in fault giving me a P431 to connect my DL360 Gen8

Yes as I have mentioned earlier your DL360 Gen9 using H241 HBA which is actually supported with MSA 1050 so this is working fine.

But in case of DL260 Gen8 you are using P431 which is actually not supported with MSA 1050 as per the HPE SPOCK so this could be the reason that this is not working

I would suggest to refer the HPE SPOCK link which I have given and identify any supported HBA and use it in DL360 Gen8 server

Hope this helps!

Hi,

If I remember well is the D3600 supported on the previous generation MSA2040 but not on the MSA2050.

These are the 2 drive enclosures supported on MSA2050:

HPE MSA 2050 LFF Disk Enclosure   Q1J06A

HPE MSA 2050 SFF Disk Enclosure   Q1J07A

Trouble Removing a d2600 disk enclosure from SA p812

I have a Proliant dl180 G6 with a P812 Smart Controller showing 4 logical devices, running Windows 2008 R2. I have three HP Storagework D2600 disk Enclosures attached to it.

Enclosure A) 12 x 2TB SATA Drives

Enclosure B) 12 x 2TB SATA Drives

Enclosure C) 12 x 2TB SAS Drives

I would like to decommission enclosure B. You'd think it would be a simple matter. I've decommisioned enclosures on other servers without a problem. On this server I'm getting a strange result. When I remove enclosure B from service and bring up the server, the controller, it shows 0 logical drives instead of 3 logical drives. If I go back to the original setup, I get 4 logical drives. When I leave the enclosure B connected and disconnected another enclosure (as a test), the controller shows 0 logical drives. None of the logical drives have anything shared between them (ie. hot spare drives). Why is this happening? How can I fix this? I don't want to screw up the other two enclosures. Thanks, in advance.

Hello,

Couple of questions for you on your configuration from the host side. Do you have MPIO installed correctly? Do you have two paths to the enclosures? Straight thru or redudant cabling? Have you unmapped the LUN/volume on the D2600 you are trying to decommission?

From your description it sounds like you have a software host side issue where the LUNs are interconnected. Did you use the SSA to configure the LUNs or a host based software solution?

However, there is not enough information here to determine your current configuration with all three enclosures connected. You mention there are 4 LUNs yet three enclosures. This inidcates you have at least one enclosure that either has 2 LUNs or you have one LUN that exists across two enclosures.  With SATA HDDs in the first two enclosures are you sure you do not have one LUN spanning those two enclosures?

I would urge a backup of your important data before proceeding further.  One consideration is to perform the backup delete all the LUNs, remove the enclosure and then you can recreate the LUNs according to your new plans. I understand that is a lot of work but would leave you with a fresh install and remove any issues.

Cheers,

Shawn

Hello,

The MSA2050 supports the MSA2050 JBOD enclosure. Only in an upgrade scenario is the MSA2040 or D2700 enclosure.

The D3600 and D3700 enclosures have never been supported on any MSA array. Please refer to SPOCK for current supported configurations: https://h20272.www2.hpe.com/spock/

Cheers,
Shawn

Hi, I have a HP MSA 2040 with a SAS connection on HP DL380 G9 servers running Windows Server 2016 Datacenter and the connectivity between the Windows server and the MSA 2040 is only 6 GB \ s while it should be 12 GB \ s. The two controllers on the MSA 2040 are 12 GB \ s and the 8644 12 GB \ s. On the servers I have HP h241 HBA 12 GB \ s cards. But it only works for 6 GB \ s.
