Hello,

There is one critical change I would suggest. You should not disconnect the power to the enclosure prior to powering down the array head. change the process to the following.

- equip Array and Enclosure with HDDs
- connect Enclosure to Array
- Power on Enclosure (wait for LEDs to stop blinking and check for error LEDs)
- Power on Array (wait till ready)
- connect to CLI and perform IP configuration
- shutdown both controllers with cli

-remove power from Array
-remove power from Enclosure

This way in case the shutdown command does not complete fully you will not have an enclosure disappearing which will cause a SAS backend domain reformation prior to removing power from the controllers.

Cheers,

Shawn

MSA 2040 13TB LUN is Recognized 11.82TB in ESXi 6.7

Hello everybody

I think the topic clearly states my problem.

9 * 1.8 TB Disks are RAID-5ed together So a total space of ~14.4 TB is available. I created a 13 TB LUN in this linear disk group (which is shown as 12.9 TB in MSA SMU). So far so good. But all my hosts which are ESXi 6.7 only detect 11.82 TB of this storage. Here are snapshots of MSA and ESXi

ESXi

MSA

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

This is likely a TB (Base 10) vs TiB (Base 2)“loss”

All HDD vendors present their disk capacities in Base 10.  Most file systems present their disk capacities in Base 2.

On the MSA, change the default “base preference” to base 2 under "User Management"

Hi, Exactly the correct answer.

Now I should calculate why a 9*1.8T RAID 5 only gives me 10.9 TiB ;)

Even if a 1.8 disk is about 1650GB

I would request you to provide me the below outputs,

show cli-parameters

show disks

show vdisks

show volumes

Otherwise you can share MSA log (store.logs) file in private chat with me. Never share MSA log in public forum.

MSA 2040 Web Connection?

$

Hello everyone, I am new to this device and I believe it has ran it's life support. I am trying to figure out how to connect to either controller via a ethernet cable to access the web interface.

Can anyone more experience share their knowledge on this task? I have a laptop on the same network and access to both straight/cross cables and plugged into both controller ports on the MSA 2040 but keeping "Page can not be displayed".

Thanks.

Are you able to ping any of the MSA controller management IPs ?

If not then better to configure your Laptop in some IP and then connect cross cable to one of the management port of the Controller. Then send full broadcast IP 255.255.255.255. Then watch from which IP you are getting response that will be your controller management IP.

Otherwise connect Serial cable to MSA controller CLI port and try to access Controllers. Please find the links which will help you,

Thanks for responding Subhajit, I have a site that I followed. I ran two patch cables to a Brocade switch and was able to access through the SAN IP address/browser. I am waiting feedback on purchasing support since this device is discontiunued.

Looks like I might have the B controller gone bad the staus is down. I tried to restart the controller  and I get "Failed to restart Controller Controller B. Just out of curiosity how much can they cost?

Hello,

Just to clarify, the MSA 2040 is officially End of Life. This means there is no new product introduction but there still is support for the product and you will be able to buy new components such as a controller. Depending on your country location, the list price for a new MSA 2040 SAN controller will be somehwere around $4500 USD. (Your price may vary.)

hardware_handler parameter of MSA2040 at RHEL 7.4

There was a path problem with RHEL 7.4 on server superdome x:

Jul 26 02:47:49 ictasstgdb01 kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: alua: Detached
Jul 26 02:47:49 ictasstgdb01 kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Synchronizing SCSI cache
Jul 26 02:47:49 ictasstgdb01 kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Synchronize Cache(10) failed: Result: hostbyte=DID_NO_CONNECT driverbyte=DRIVER_OK
Jul 26 02:47:49 ictasstgdb01 multipathd: sda: remove path (uevent)

So Linux engineer recommended customer needs to change from hardware_handler "0" to hardware_handler "1 alua" :

# cat /etc/multipath.conf
defaults {
        find_multipaths yes
        user_friendly_names yes
}
devices {
        device{
                                vendor "HP"
                                product "MSA 2040 SAN"
                                path_grouping_policy group_by_prio
                                path_selector "round-robin 0"
                                path_checker tur
                                hardware_handler "0"   -> hardware_handler "1 alua"
                                failback immediate
                                rr_weight uniform
                                rr_min_io_rq 1
                                no_path_retry 3

I tried to find document related with that but I can't.
Can we change the parameter as linux engineer said ?

Re: MSA2040 Storage Tiering - possible to create multiple pools?

Hello

we have MSA 2040 and 2 controller.

I have Virtual pool installed, on B with free read cache function.

I want to add another pool on A, but system said that i must add licence...

i don't know if i forgot something or don't do the good step.

i try too add pool with group disk ?

Re: MSA2040 Storage Tiering - possible to create multiple pools?

In Pool B it looks like there are two Virtual DIsk Group. Out of them one is used as Read Cache so that one created with SSD drive. What about other VDG ?

Now in Pool A what type of drive you want to use to create new Virtual Disk Group ? is it SAS drives or SSD ?

Can you please provide me the below output,

# show disks

# show pools

# show disk-groups

You cannot create virtual disk groups that contain SSDs without the Performance tier license. You can have SSDs in a fault tolerant Disk Group as a Performance Tier or as a non-fault tolerant (up to 2 disks) Disk Group as Read Cache. But neither pool can have both a Performance Tier and a Read Cache. For example, pool A can have a Performance Tier and pool B can have a Read Cache.

Note any license required for the System level and it's not specific to any Pool.

You must have tried to create VDG and got error because there is bydefault two Pools exist. If you are unable to see another Pool that's because there is no VDG exist for that Pool.

Hope this helps!

first tks for reply

See attachement for command

so we have 8 avalaible disks and 1 ssd. I want to create new pool with this 8 disks, and add read cache with ssd to this pool.

Thanks for providing the outputs.

Are you not able to create new Virtual Disk Group with all 8 SAS drives ? at the time of VDG creation you need to select Pool A where you want to associate this new VDG.

After that you can create SSD Read-cache VDG with the available SSD drive and associate it with Pool A

If you are getting any error then please share the screenshot.

Hope this helps!

Have you ever figured out the problem? I'm facing same problems. Only works with all initiators group which is very weird.

It looks like you are able to present the volume by selecting "All Other Initiators" option which is nothing but default mapping. So volume is accessible through default mapping.

We would like to understand how you are doing explicit mapping, where things going wrong so that we can try to help you. If possible just present a single volume to a single host through explicit mapping and capture those screenshots for our understanding.

Hope this helps!
