Re: MSA 2042, setup SSD Tiering

your configuration looks fine, remember the Auto-tiering allows you to offer a pool on which you will now build volumes, the concept is very different from linear volumes.

You are not creating volumes directly on the SSD or SAS disk, but you create volumes on the pool which is built with a mix of SSD and SAS. the auto-tiering will take the responsabiility to move data between SSD and SAS itself accoridng to performance requires by your workload. keep in mind that we are talking about "Auto-Tiering"

i would advise you create another pool B, and balance data (volumes between ) those 2 pools (A,B) and avoid using only one pool.

I'm confused about what you want and what you're being told.  An MSA 1040 with SAS connection to your host doesn't need switches - it effectively allows you to direct connect with a SAS cable your MSA to your host.  How many servers are you trying to use with your MSA 1040?  What specifically are your hosts? If they are ProLiants, all you need is SAS cables to connect to the MSA.

And I have no idea why you're being told you need an ProLiant DL180.

Here is a link to the MSA 1040 User Guide. A few things to look at:

  • Figure 6 on page 14 shows the back of the MSA 1040 with the SAS host ports.
  • Page 28 starts a section on how to connect MSA 1040 with SAS to hosts.  It has lots of instructions as well as diagrams that show different number of hosts.
  • One additional thing to mention is something called a SAS "fan-out-cable" that we only support with the MSA 1040 that allows you to double the number of hosts.  Fan-out cables are discussed in multiple places in the User Guide if that's something you need.

If you didn't get the cables you need, be sure to use the supported SAS cables that are in the MSA 1040 QuickSpec. Not sure why but the in the User Guide it uses "fan-out" cable and in the QuickSpec there's no dash (fanout) - so if you are searching the PDFs to find those terms.

Connecting your MSAs via SAS is the easiest way - really, you'd use iSCSI only if there are more servers to connect than what is supported with SAS or the servers your connecting don't support SAS.

Hope that helps!

- How many servers are you trying to use with your MSA 1040?

Well, 0 server.  We wanted a storage server that can work with our computers (HP compaq Elit) directly to store and retreive videos.
But, by mistake,  we got MSA 1040 SAS  and we are currently searching a solution to make it work.
We have only one server proliant but we are using it for http requests (in the DMZ) and it is not possible to connect the MSA with it (for security reasons).

- And I have no idea why you're being told you need an ProLiant DL180.
The consultant said it is compatible with MSA 1040 SAS  and I can connect them using HP H241 12Gb 2-ports Ext Smart Host Bus Adapter 726911-B21.

We don't have HP storage experts in our country and we keep looking for a solution.

So if I understand you, you have PCs that you want to have shared access to files, like video files, right?  MSA isn't an option for that.  It is a block-based storage array that connects to a SAN (or directly to servers via SAS).  You need a file sharing or NAS solution. Unless you have a server application (like Windows Storage Server) that provides file services using the MSA as the storage connected to the server, it isn't an option for what you're trying to do.

So if what I said is correct, you need a NAS solution.  In the HPE Storage portfolio, the HPE StoreEasy could address what you want.  Here are a few links to help you learn more:

The other option is to use an inexpensive 3rd party NAS solution - one that I hear a lot of small companies use is Synology.

But based on what you've said, MSA, even with iSCSI, is not going to address what you want without more work of connecting it to a server that has file serving capabilites.

We decided to keep the MSA 1040 SAS and as we have only a budget of 6000 Dollars to fix this issue, we found that the best solution is to buy a new HP proliant server with an  HP H241 12Gb 2-ports Ext Smart Host Bus Adapter 726911-B21  integrated.

To avoid waiting 3 months to import the proliant, we searched on proliant servers available in my country. There is proliant DL 380 that I could verify its compatibilty with Ext Smart Host Bus Adapter 726911-B21  in  Page 3 :  Quickspec

We received an expert today and he said we have HD SAS ports on or MSA (product no: K2Q90A),  and we need 2 cables like this one :  External HD Mini SAS to SFF-8644 cable on amazon . I couldn't find its equivalent on HP site.  He said Mini-SAS HD to Mini-SAS Cables listed in page 27 of Quickspecs are not going to work.

I would like to confirme the correctness of this solution with you. I still need the reference of the cable if the solution is correct.

On the proliant, we will use a Windows server 2008 R2. Is there a driver that we need to puchase so that windows server 2008 reconize the bus adapter ?

Thank you very much for your help

MSA 2040 Firmware Update

Hello,

I just got a MSA 2040 with 12 900GB 10K drives and 2 400GB SSD drives. I will use 10GbE iSCSI for this.

I have read that you need to update to the latest firmware to be able to use iSCSI but maybe that's not needed anymore?

However I would like to see if I have the latest firmwares installed but I can't seem to find the right information about this.

If I click on "Update Firmware" I get the following:

Bundle Version: GL220P008
Storage Controller Code Version: GL220P009-02
Storage Controller Loader Code Version: 27.016
Memory Controller FPGA Code Version
Management Controller Code Version: GLM220R009-10
Management Controller Loader Code Version: 6.18.22216
Expander Controller Code Version: 3203
CPLD Code Version 55

These are the same for both Controller A and B.

But if I check on the HPE site for Drivers, Firmwares etc for my SAN the latest version is "GL220P009"

I read somewhere that there is a Windows executable that will update the firmware for both controllers but I'm not able to find it anywhere. Does anyone know if there is something like this?

Also, I've been trying to create a support ticket with HPE but it keeps telling me that the serial number doesn't match the product specified.

Thanks. So that's the only firmware you can update? So there's not a separate firmaware for "Management Controller" etc.?

Dear  All.

I checked P2000 G3 the SMU found that the control card B problems, but I am not sure the control card B CF card is normal (because the replacement of the control card needs the old CF Card back to the new control card), how to deal with this case, thank you ~

MSA 2040 overcommits when there is available space

I have an MSA 2040 with 2 x storage pools. 1 with 1 x volume (A) and 1 with 2 x volumes (B & C). Both storage pools are Virtual.

Currently pool 1 shows 8389.9GB Size and 6986.1GB Allocated with 1403.8GB Unallocated.

When I try to grow volume A by 500GB it states if I continue it will 'Overcommit the virtual pool'.

Why is this and how can I expand the volume without overcommitting the storage.

Any help greatly appreciated

Hi,

to be sure, are this cables correct to connect a MSA2040 SAS controller to a HBA H241?

HP External 1.0m (3ft) Mini-SAS HD 4x to Mini-SAS HD 4x Cable 716195-B21

HP External 2.0m (6ft) Mini-SAS HD 4x to Mini-SAS HD 4x Cable 716197-B21

HP External 4.0m (13ft) Mini-SAS HD 4x to Mini-SAS HD 4x Cable 716199-B21

NOTE: These cables are used to connect 12Gb SAS initiator to MSA 2040 SAS controller. These are not used for connecting to a disk enclosure.

SAS Host Bus Adapters (HBAs)

HP H241 12Gb 2-ports Ext Smart Host Bus Adapter 726911-B21

The CF Card holds only the Write Cache in case of Power loos.

Use the new Card if you think the Card is the problem.

I have 2 StoreVirtual 3200 SANs running 13.5 they are currently configured with SAS 10K drives. Can I add SSD drives to enable Disk Tiering and Adaptive Optimization on the fly, or would I need to reconfigure bothe SAN Nodes?

Putty to MSA 1040 gives sh: write error: No space left on device

Hi,

I'm trying to Putty into an MSA 1040 but it gives "sh: write error: No space left on device" and puts me back to the logon. I know the logon is correct as if I do it wrong it says "Login incorrect"

I'm attaching from a 2012 VM server using USB passthrough from an ESX host, I have the MSA driver installed on com3 and it works in another site fine. I also tried from 2008 server and get the same error in putty.

Any ideas?
I need to get in to be able to set the IP adress of the iLO up. It's currently displaying an IP of 10.0.0.2 which I can't get to.
