HP MSA 2050 Remove Disk Groups
Hi, got an odd one here, MSA2050 unit which oreviously had 4 disk shelves attached. This was in preoduction and working. It got rmeoved froj our DR site, but now needs to be repurposed for another site.
We only have the 2050 controller, not the extra disk shelves.
Trying to remove the disk groups and it fails. I've logged a call with HP, and we have dequrantined the disks, but are still unable to remove the disk groups, nor the volumes.
I don't care about the data, I just want to reconfigure the device, I can't believe they make it this hard, it was simle on NetApp

Re: MSA 2062 secondary controller not connected
Just FYI, when plugging in SAS connectors, they should feel like they snap in a little.
You can check them by pulling lightly on them.. if they are snapped in correctly they will not pull out.
If you plugged them in upside down they will seem to go in all the way but they will pull out easily.
Good luck, I had review a teammates setup of the MSA and this was the first thing I found.
MSA 2040, remove disk group from pool , disk not available
hi
i have msa 2040 with 1 pool and 3 virtual disk group with enough space.
i deleted one of the virtual disk group that have volume and data, after that status virtual group went to Vdrain.
after 3days Vdrain compelete but 7 disk 1.2tb status is
usage : Pool,linear
NOT
usage :Available!!!!!
is that normal?
can i remove phisycal from Enclosure?
because in past i deleted linear diskgroup and phisycal disk status is availble and i could recreate new diskgroup but at now i can not!!!
What is the solution?

Re: Query: MSA 2040, remove disk group from pool , disk not available
Thank you, you are very smart, but this is not the answer to my question. I need an answer to my question, not a link to the documents. Before, I did not get the answers to the documents myself, that's why I asked a question in the forum
Re: Query: HP MSA 2050 Remove Disk Groups
Certainly! When dealing with storage systems like HP MSA 2050 and NetApp, the process of removing disk groups generally follows these steps:
Access MSA or NetApp Management: Log into the respective web interface or command-line interface of your HP MSA 2050 or NetApp storage system. Admin credentials will be required.
Navigate to Disk Groups: Locate the section related to "Disk Groups" or "Storage Pools." This is where you manage your storage configurations.
Select Disk Groups: Identify the specific disk group you intend to remove. Click on it to select it for removal.
Remove Disk Group: Look for an option like "Delete," "Remove," or "Disband." Click on this option. The system may prompt you for confirmation. Confirm the action.
Confirm Removal: Double-check and confirm that you want to proceed with removing the disk group. Confirmations are essential as this action erases all data within the group.
Wait for the Process: The system will initiate the process of removing the disk group. Please be patient as this may take a few minutes.
Verify Removal: Once the process is complete, verify that the disk group has been successfully removed from the list of active storage configurations.
Always ensure you have backups of critical data before making significant changes to your storage systems like HP storage or NetApp Storage. If you encounter difficulties, it's advisable to seek assistance from HP or NetApp support teams, as they can provide tailored guidance based on your specific system configurations.
Re: MSA Drives in HPE server?
Hi There,
Thank you for reaching out.
The drives used in MSA are quite similar to the ones used in Gen10 servers. It's the drive firmware and the HDD backplane that is to be checked.
We'd suggest you to check the firmware compatibility with your server. Alternatively, you can log a support case with us.
If the main purpose of this setup is to run a NAS based solution, We would reccomend you to check - https://www.hpe.com/in/en/storage/storeeasy-file-storage.html#portfolio
Re: MSA Drives in HPE server?
A disclaimer -
For using the same drives, you might have to delete the existing data and use them as a fresh drive.
Please maintain valid data backup.
Re: MSA 2040, remove disk group from pool , disk not available
HI,
Ideally the disks should appear in available state once vdrain gets completed.
Could you share the output of below commands?
show pools
show disk-groups
show disks
show versions
Note: Remove any information that is confidential before posting the output.
Re: How to disable FDE on MSA2060
This worked. FDE is now off. Just had to recreate everything and reinstall OS. Strangely enough, hdparm -t on 2 disk volume is 1/2 the performance with FDE off. Not the case on 6 disk volume where hdparm -t performance was close to identical with FDE on. But from your comments on how the MSA handles volumes it seems its not possible to know where the reads are physically happening.
That's a whole different problem: How to maximize performance of MSA2060 when used for a single OS (SLES15 in my case) installation. No esxi, no vmware, just native SLES15 installation (boot from SAN). How to configure a MSA to replicate the I/O throughput obtained with multiple logical drives and multiple RAID controllers on a server with internal storage.
MSA2060 Specifically how is a SSD Read Cache created for a volume
Documentation states that without the LTU license, SSD's can be used as Read Cache for a Volume. Prior to obtaining and importing the license, I was unable to do this. As soon as I plugged in SSD's, their LED's were yellow and SMU stated they couldn't be used as there was no license.
Now that I have a license, I can create a volume from SSD's, but how exactly do I assign an SSD to a spinning disk volume to be used as read cache instead? Has anyone actually done this. How did you do it?
Re: HP MSA 2050 Remove Disk Groups
@Dave49
Push on the call with HPE support. They need a higher level support in order to remove an incomplete pool.
If you post the ticket number you have we can try to meet in the middle.
The reason for the difficulty in doing this is that every disk-group in the Pool is dependent on every other disk-group. Your data may be on any component in the Pool. Removing a disk-group from a Pool while it is not intact will lead to data loss.
In your case the data loss is acceptable other cases an action to clear the disk-group may not be as well understood and allow a customer to corrupt all their data.
Sorry for the hassle but the alternative for less experienced user is catastrophic.

Write Back Status: Disabled
Hi all,
We have 2 MSA2060 with the same configuration.
1 diskgroup with 1 pool. I see that the Write Back Status is disabled for controller A. I have searched online for some help why it is disabled. The best thing I can find is to reboot the controller, but after reboot and even firmware update on both of our MSA2060 the Status stays disabled.
Is it because our virtual pool space high threshold has been exceeded? A configuration issue? I can't believe that both MSA2060 have the same hardware issue.
Below some info.
Best Regards,
Guy

Hi,
Please let us know whether you would still require any assistance with the issue. Please share the command outputs so that I could check and suggest further.
Re: Query: HP MSA 2050 Remove Disk Groups
@support_s Thanks for the links, but I had alredy followed these, it seems the solution is not availabel to end users, but requires HPE intervention.
Re: Query: HP MSA 2050 Remove Disk Groups
@yazmeh ,I agree, these would be the normal steps, however this particular MSA is the controller module that was located in our DR site (prior to decomission) and it did have 4 extra disk enclosures attached to it. The disk enclosures have been destroyed/sent to landfil, or wherever the disposal company has done with them.
Unfortunately, the configuration wasn't removed form the deivce prior to its removal from the location, and this is where the problem lies.
As an end user I am unable to force the deletion/removal of the configuration from this device without HPE assistance.
I understand there is the issue of potential data loss, but in our case thats not a problem, as the device was intended to be disposed of, but an opportunity to re-use was seen (and currently not implemented)
Cheers
