Re: MSA2040 Storage Tiering - possible to create multiple pools?

$

@rgijsen

If you have a dual controller MSA, you can make a POOL on each controller.  We do not support multiple POOLs on the same controller (except in a failover situation).  I would suggest that you purchase the SSDs (Max 2 per Pool, <4TB) and use the FREE Read-Cache feature.  If that is not enough performance boost you can purchase the PERF Tier License and convert the drives over to a READ/WRITE component.  One thing to be aware of is depending on the workload applied, SSDs may not improve performance.  Sequential workloads will be serviced from the spinning media, random workloads will be serviced from SSD.

Note:  There is no in-box conversion of Linear to Virtual storage.  This is in essence a backup, wipe, replace of the data.

Make sure they are using the best practices on DISK-GROUP creation to maximize the performance.

http://h20195.www2.hp.com/V2/getpdf.aspx/4AA4-6892ENW.pdf

There is a statement in the Best Practices Guide about POOL Balancing across the “2 pools”. And other inferences to 2 pools throughout the document.

In fact to maximize the performance of the array, you NEED to create 2 POOLs.  Each POOL is serviced by one controller, much like creating VDISKs in Linear storage where a VDISK is owned by a controller, all the DISK-GROUPs in a POOL will be serviced by a single controller.

The MSA Auto-Tiering is MUCH simpler than other products.  Here are the basic decision points:

  1. What RAID type (RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10)?
  2. How many disks?  (see BP Guide for optimal performance)
  3. Which POOL?  A or B   (Assuming dual controller)

That’s it.  Based upon the disk characteristics the new DISK-GROUP will either be Performance (SSD),  Standard (10k/15k SAS), Archive (7.2k MDL-SAS).

Hope that helps!

Hello

We have a MSA 2000 with two controllers PN AJ803A but at last week, one of the controllers went offline and now we need to replace it. We have a new controller and as we can see, this new controller with PN AP837A is supported by MSA 2000 and our question is: ca we work with two different contollers that I litsted?

Thanks

It does not matter, this is only for the Update Programm, the Firmware Inside is the same.

If you Install the Firmware from a Windows PC/Server than Download the Windows Version and start the Update Programm.

If you have a Linux Client use the Linux Version, or use the Windows, extract the Firmware Image and use the MSA Web GUI.

Difference between "Mixed Use-3" and "Mixed Use-2" SATA SSD's

Hello all, I am just looking into finally moving from mechanical drives to SSD but I am a little bit confused about HP's wording on SSD's

The following two disks are exactly the same price but the "mixed use" working is different.

816965-B21  HP 120GB 6G SATA Mixed Use-3 SFF 2.5-in SC 3yr Wty Solid State Drive
804613-B21  HP 200GB 6G SATA Mixed Use-2 SFF 2.5-in SC 3yr Wty Solid State Drive

I can get an extra 80gb for the same price as the 120gb "Mixed Use-3" but I don't understand what i am losing by doing so? ( I can see the IOPS are lower, is it that simple?)

I have tried to find info on what HP's "Mixed Use-<Number>" numbers mean but I have not been very successful.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

MSA 1040: How to discover WWN initiator[ New ]

Good Morning,

I'm Braziliam and my english is very bad, any form I will try explain my quest.

This is may scenary:

I have a MSA 1040 Storage, 1 volume with 1TB created and need presend this volume to server.

The server have two HBA controllers.

First I create two iniciators, one for each ports of HBA:

Discovery

After that, I map (Volumes > Action > Map Volume) the volume for WWN's above, see below:

Mapped

Even mapped, I can not see the volume on the server.

My suspicionisthat it isnot showing upbecauseeven though IpresentedtheWWN,thestoragecould notdiscover it, as shown inthe firstpicture.

How to solve this problem? I'm doing the right way?

connect MDS 600 to A HP MSA 2000 via SAS

Hi Hope someone can help.

We currently have a HP Dothill Storageworks SAS which i think has a MSA2012FC controller. We also have a MSA2000 SAS expansion array connected via the SAS port. We were looking to get a MDS 600 and hoping to swap out the MSA2000 SAS array. the MSA2000 uses the SAS SFF-8470 connector, while the MDS 600 uses the SFF-8088.

If I was to use a SFF-8088 to a SFF-8470 cable will my current controller be able to see the MDS 600 as an additional enclosure?

Essentially i'm looking for high density storage to be added to my current SAS controller.

Your advice on this would be much appreciated?

Recommended Action:

  - The first time this event is logged with Warning severity, if the indicated disk is not running the latest firmware, update the disk firmware.

  - If this event is logged with Warning severity for the same disk more than five times in one week, and the indicated disk is running the latest firmware, replace the disk.

Note : I have One Hard disk as a Global Spare in  (slot 12).

can i know how to the full  step of replacement of the faulty disk number 6 & use the spare which is in slot 12.

HP MSA SAN issue

Hi

We have a MSA2000  controllers model 2012fc G1 Modular Smart Array with additional 12 bay enclosures.

We have 14 disks and 2 spares.

Dirung the night we had a disk failure and the spare kicked in as expected but during the vdisk reconstruct a 2nd disk failed, causing the reconstruct to fail and the VDISK to go offline.

What do I need to do to get the vdisk back online and not lose any data?

Thanks

Hi, Is the server connected direct to MSA or through SAN Switch. According change the initiator topology to either point-to-point(PTP) or loop.

Secondly also verify the FC HBA drivers has been installed and its getting detected in device manager in server.

Rajneesh
