Re: Disk Performance - VMWARE 6.7, MSA2040 SAS and software iSCSI

I see that vsphere 6.5 U2 is not supported right now by MSA 2040, is that correct ?

What about compatibility with the new firmware GL225P001  ? (6.5 U2 and 6.7, U1 ?)

Thanks

Brice

Yes ESX 6.5 U2 not yet tested by HPE with MSA2040

Infact even VMWare website also shows MSA2040 supported upto ESX 6.5 U1

Attached are the screenshots for your reference

Yes GL225R003 is supported with MSA2040 and ESX 6.5 U1

There is no firmware called GL225P001

Please find the link to check all firmware details,

Hope this helps!

Re: P2000 MSA G3 Controller B network degraded (but still seems to be working)

Hello,

You might try to unplug the network cable from the management port on controller B. Then do a ping to the IP address of the B controller management port just to confirm there is no other device on your network set to the same IP address. Once you confirm there is not a duplicate IP address, reconnect the network cable and test the connection.

Sometime either the network port is not fully connected or the duplicate IP address causes the issue. If that does not correct the problem try switching network cables between the A & B management ports on the controllers just to confirm it is not your network cable or switch ports.

There are lots of fixes for the management ports and management controllers between TS230 and current supported firmware TS252P005. While I understand you have not yet had issues, upgrading to avoid hitting problems already corrected in current firmware should be a consideration worth thinking over. Plus it makes replacing a controller much easier when on current firmware versions!

As mentioned previously there is an upgrade path you will need to follow.

UPGRADE NOTE:
If upgrading from an older version of firmware it may require a multiple step process to get to TS252.
If below TS230 then upgrade to TS230P008 first, then TS240P004, and then TS250P003 before upgrading to TS252P005. If the firmware is between the mentioned versions, it is recommended to follow through the steps as well.

Good luck!

Cheers,

Shawn

Hello,

Without knowing your full environement or requirements it is hard to make specific recommendations. You might wish to start with the MSA2050 - Microsoft 2016 Implementation Guide.

Hi Brice13

I can see that this link is referring to FC, Fibre Channel.....

I've gone through SPOCK and cannot even find the link you sent!  would you know if there is a firmware update for the 2040 with iSCSI controllers?

Just an update on where I'm at with this!

I downgraded one of the ESXi hosts from 6.7 to 6.5 Build 5310538.

I then modified Pool A on the MSA 2040. I added a second Disk Group to it. I then rebooted the esxi 6.5 host. (The vmware datastores for my esxi environemtn are located on Pool A.)

On reboot the datastores loaded correctly in ESXi 6.5! Dang!

This means that the problem is ESXi 6.7. Its not compatible the MSA 2040 GL225R003 firmware. Downgrading the esxi hosts to 6.5 is going to create a huge load of problems for the existing VMs (all built in the 6.7 environment), VM hardware version, vmotion, EVC mode....a right headache!

Oh! maybe you are correct - maybe there is only one version.  I've no idea!  Maybe Subhajit would know?

I would suggest not to consider any firmware if it's not mentioned in the below website,

www.hpe.com/storage/MSAFirmware

If there was something mentioned like GL225P001 but now it't not there then don't consider this. As HPE follow SPOCK only for support perspective which is updated latest. This HPE tech forum will not discuss anything about future firmware versions.

For MSA2040 FC/iSCSI/SAS GL225R003 is the latest firmware and this is same firmware for all these models.

You can also check SPOCK link,

HPE Policy on End of Life gear

Hi There

If HPE release a new product do they ensure that that new product is compatible with products that are recently End of Life.

For example from what I can read the 900GB SAS 10k 12GB disk Model Number EG0900JFCKB is compatible with G1 - G7 servers.  Does that mean its not compatible with G9 servers?  Do HPe release a new disk for the G8-G9 servers? What happens if a someone (a friend of mine!) has bought a disk without checking the Model Number and starts to notice performance issues that he cannot explain?

What about old storage array compatibility with disks;  the disk fits in the slot - but thats that mean the disk and the storage are compatible?

SPOCK doe snot provide this level of detail about compatibility - the release notes do not seem to provide this level of detail on compatibility.

It seems your query related to Servers so request you to post the same in correct product forum.

If you would have ask the same for MSA then I would suggest to refer the below matrix always to check for supported drives,

https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c04315770

Then copy the Spare part number for respective drive model and search in HPE Partsurfer there you can see that particular drive applicable to what all products,

https://partsurfer.hpe.com/Search.aspx?searchText=787647-001

Hope this helps!

thanks I'll post on the server site -

From the MSA point of view it looks like the 2040 and the disk I'm using are compatible.

technically speaking no G7 and older disk is compatible to Gen8 and newer, because starting with Gen8 a new "smart" disk carrier is used.

Hi There

I'm getting contradictory information from the HPE web site about MSA 2040 and Disk compatibility

This HPE link says that the MSA supports "900GB SAS HDD MSA - 12 Gb/s transfer rate, 10,000 rpm, 2.5-inch SFF, Enterprise"

https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docLocale=en_US&docId=emr_na-c03820001

However this HPE Link says that 12GB/s disks are supported at 6Gb/s

https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docLocale=en_US&docId=emr_na-a00003676en_us

There is a huge difference is price between a 6Gb/s disk and a 12Gb/s disk.

Should I only purchase 6gb/s disks for the MSA 2040?

Ta,

Re: HPE Policy on End of Life gear

You need to look at the backend Speed of the Chassis. For MSA2040 only 6G backend speed supported so even if you use 12Gb/s drive but effective speed will be 6Gb/s only. Please find MSA2040 Chassis details,

Chassis 2U24 6Gb MSA 2040 - Will accept one or two MSA 2040 SAN or SAS controllers - Holds Twenty-Four 2.5-inch Small Form Factor (SFF) drives
639410-001
Chassis 2U12 6Gb MSA 2040 - Will accept one or two MSA 2040 SAN or SAS controllers - Holds twelve 3.5-inch Large Form Factor (LFF) drives
717869-001

So the information mentioned not wrong. It's just that 12Gb/S drives supported or not. Yes they are supported but they will be downgraded to 6Gb/s

So yes you can save some $ by selecting 6Gb/s speed drives for MSA2040

Hope this helps!
