Create a Host Group ESX an put both ESX Servers in there.

Create One or two Pools and Volumes in there.

Present the Volumes to the ESX Group.

On the ESX Server configure Round Robin.

thats all

Upgrading storage controller firmware on P2000 G3

Hi

I've been brought into a site to do a SAN extension, adding a second enclosure etc (that's been done no problems) and found that the controllers are way out of date - they are on TS240 and I think need to go to TS250 before flashing to T252

Does anyone have experience of doing this and can advise of any gotchas?  Telnet and FTP are enabled and I've downloaded the packages - the hosts and VM's are going to be shut down etc.

I'm just really nervous as only have a weekend to do what I need to do and controller firmware is going to take a fairly hefty chunk of that

Thanks in advance

Jason

>> Please upgrade all your arrays to TS250 or latest released firmware version

This is something I don't really understand.

What means "latest released firmware version"?

It is written on the web page, but not in the release notes?

There is Version:TS251P006-02 between, however.

IIRC I already did this update.

 EDIT:

Found another note:

Upgrade all your HP P2000 G3 MSA arrays to TS250 or later firmware version before going with TS252 flashing. For arrays on earlier versions of firmware, upgrade to TS230P008 first and then TS250P002 before upgrading to TS252R007.

So try to install the binary file *.bin via FTP or SMU.

I have an issue with suddenly not being able to login to the controller(s) web page - "Unable to authenticate login, try again'

I can telnet to them however

Is reset of A controller then B controller recommended during production hours? Or best to schedule for out of hours?

Thanks

Jason

P2000 G3 Migrating to MSA1040

I´m on a tight budget and need to migrate to a new storage as mine is no longer under warranty and costs to renew are absurd, I just want to know if the disks on the P2000 G3 are compatible with the MSA1040, of course them being the same form factor (3.5"/SAS), reading the "Upgrading to the HPE MSA 1040 or HPE MSA 2040" its seems they are compatible but I just need to be sure.

The plans is not to just change the controller but buy the whole MSA1040

The HD I have on the P2000 G3 are:

AP860A - HP P2000 600GB 6G SAS 15K LFF (3.5 inch) DP ENT HDD

Carlos,

you might have chosen the wrong forum. The Storage Essentials Support forum refers to the HP Software Product Storage Essentials or Storage Operations Manager. Your questions seems to require answers from some HP Hardware Team. Probably you can check if there is also a hardware forum which might help you to answer these questions.

Best Regards,

Dieter

Hello Carlos,

I agree with Dieter.  This is not the correct forum for your question.

I have a P2000 G3 within my lab.  It sounds like you are trying to physically move the drives from the P2000 to the MSA.

If you have drives in both arrays and plan on moving the data across without risking the existing drive configurations, then I would say it should work.  If you are talking about physically moving the physical drives from one array to another, then I would say no.  The controllers configure the RAID configuration and that could cause a serious problem.

In either case, I suggest, like Dieter, that you contact the HPE Storage HW team to ask your question.

Regards,

Mark

DL360 G5 with attached MSA60 - unable to update firmware

0

I've tried to read just about every article on the internet about how to update the firmware on the MSA60 but I can't quite seem to get mine to work.

A quick overview is that I'm currently on firmware 1.4 for the MSA60. I read that to go past 1.5 you need newer backplanes. I assumed ours were too old so I tried to purchase newer ones. (399050-001) Went from Revision 0B to Revision 0C.

I then tried using the HP SPP update utility along with CP013530.scexe (2.28 firmware) but it didn't recognize my p800 card. I then tried the HP Smart Update Firmware DVD but it also didn't recognize the controller card. In a last ditch effort, I tried using the HP ProLiant Firmware Maintenance CD 8.00 along with firmware 2.16. This time, it actually recognized the card and said I needed to update the MSA60.

Great I thought, finally it noticed my hardware. After a few seconds, the installation failed stating that I must update to a newer set of backplanes (454574-001, different part number but still a 'backplane', confusing..) and linked me to this article (http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c01388517&lang=en-us&cc=us).

I'm very lost right now. I'm simply running a DL360 G5 with an MSA60 and a single I/O module. I'm stuck on firmware 1.4 and I just want to update so that I can utilize 2-TB SAS drives instead of the current 1-TB SAS drives.

Can anyone help me in any fashion, I'd really appreciate it.

-Thanks

The article

h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c01388517&lang=en-us&cc=us

is telling you there are midplane and backplanes to replaced. Did you do this? Compare the part numbers.

Re: DL360 G5 with attached MSA60 - unable to update firmware

Several weeks ago, I spoke with an HPE tech rep about what was required in order to update the firmware to support those larger disks. It was stated from them that only the backplane replacement was necessary, which is why we ordered and replaced 399050-001 (which is the part I was told needed replacing). They stated that a midplane replacement wasn't necessary.

Also, the article is weird because it references what you need to do to work with 2 I/O modules, which we are not, we only have 1. It also states that "for HP MSA60...the replacement backplanes should be Revision B or later". Well the backplane I bought (399050-001) and put in there was in fact Revision C.

I also came across this article, which worries me a bit:

http://community.hpe.com/t5/Storage-Area-Networks-SAN-Small/MSA60-Firmware-update/td-p/6749863

This user seems to have tried much of the same procedure that I have, but has essentially bricked their MSA60 because of non-updateable firmware.

I vaguely remember that you need to disable the built-in smart array if the msa is connected to a P800.

Try to disable the P4x0 smart array in BIOS, the boot the firmware DVD/USB and try the update.

This update has to be done offline anyway.

Hi Carlos,

Online migration from your existing P2000 G3 to a new MSA 1040 or 2040 should work fine as we do support 6Gb SAS drives in both platforms.  One of the hallmarks of the MSA family has been what we call "data in place" upgrades that allow you to move drives from generation MSA to a new generation.

Here's a link to the upgrade white paper: http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx%2F4AA4-6830ENW.pdf

I have not personally done the data in place upgrade myself so be sure to talk to your HPE rep or channel partner before you proceed.  Lastly, I'm as I type putting the finishing touches on a blog post talking about what's new with the MSA. . It should be live in the next 30 minutes or so as I'm just checking for typos.

Let me know if you have more questions.

MSA 2040 Host Name Problem

0

Hello,

we just updated to the newest Firmware on our MSA2040fc SAN.

As a new feature we saw that we can build host groups now.

As we would like to use the this feature, we started looking into this. The Problem is that our Hostnames are Empty (attached image)

Could this be a configuration problem on the HBA Apdaters as i cannot create hostsgroups without hostnames it seems?

We can give the initators nicknames as seen in the image but that's about it. The Nickname feature was called "Host Name" in the older firmware before which makes this even more confusing. In the overview we can see that we do have 10 iniators and 0 Hosts which of course is not true.

We do have 3 ESX and 2 Backup-Hosts with 2 HBA Ports each which are connected to 2 HP (Brocade) FC Switches which again are connected to our 2 MSAs.

I need to read about this feature, but I'm sure you need to input the hostname manually on the msa (like you did in command view eva), because the array cannot get the hostname over fibre.

>because the array cannot get the hostname over fibre.

Perhaps not on MSA but the HPE 3PAR has a host agent to get this info.

From SMU user guide:

To create a host, enter a name for the host in the Host Select field.

...

Host. Shows the host name if the initiator is grouped into a host; otherwise, -nohost-.

...

You need to manually give the host entry a name.

You may group several initiators of the same server to a host and add hosts with same mappings to a host group (e.g.  all servers of a cluster).
